Cameroonian designer Serge Mouangue’s WAfrica – a combination of a Japanese word for spirit, ‘wa’, and Africa – is a testament to how expanding the imagination can make way to beautiful and distinct creations. Proof of one thing: giving birth to a “totally new cultural dimension” is possible.
Though we, here at AS4A, are a little late getting introduced to Mouangue’s experimental production of Japanese kimono with African fabric, this innovative clothing design was launched to the world in 2007. Yet, fresh to this day, the Japanese and West African cultural fusion that gave birth to an incredible aesthetical design remains to be a timeless magnificent creation.
Here you’ll find photographs that exhibit what Mouangue considers to be the process of creating something completely original – a third aesthetic that is more than a simple blending of two existing cultures.
