Ethiocolor

Selam Sounds in collaboration with Stocktown Films releases Ethiocolor’s Music Video produced with 360 Virtual Reality Technology.

Ethiocolor is a traditional Ethiopian cultural band known for its vibrant traditional style performances. The band, embracing and advancing its cultural folklore and musical heritage, is comprised of traditional instruments such as the Kraar (five- or six-stringed bowl-shaped lyre), Washint (end-blown wooden flute), Kebero (double-headed, conical hand drum), and Masenqo (single-stringed bowed lute) alongside cultural dancers and musicians. The group’s vision, according to the co-founder of the group Melaku Belay is to carry out their musical heritage in a very creative way without losing a sense of their identity. A celebrated ensemble, they are cultural heritage preservers offering tradition and artistic taste –an attraction for music and dance aficionados.

Recently, Ethiocolor released a music video produced by Selam Sounds in collaboration with Stocktown Films. The music video, in a rather revolutionary sense made with innovative 360 VR technology is a first drop from their latest released album. A fusion of folklore and contemporary influences, the album is produced by Swedish musician Andreas Unge and represented by Selam Sounds.

Filmed on the rooftop of the historical National Theatre in central Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, the music video is a marriage of traditional elegance and modern technology. Innovatively, while delivering to the web-viewing public panoramic imagery, it features the group’s aesthetical performance of chest jilting, intense shoulder roll and bounce; a fresh and dynamic visual narrative showing the complete and dynamic characteristics of Ethiocolor. “Ethiocolor is a great live act and therefore we decided to use the new 360 VR technology to capture their performance and give the use a vibrant experience,” says Senay Berhe of Stocktown Films.
